Selected as a pilot university in the field of animal husbandry, Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) continues its work in this field by adding new projects. MAKÜ scientists, who have taken on the task of combating animal diseases and preventing calf losses, are adding value to the economy of the region and the country, especially Burdur, with the projects they produce.

One of these projects is a wheeled car for bedridden calves, developed by academics from the MAKÜ Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and in the patent process. The wheeled car project has been a major solution to calf deaths for breeders in Burdur and surrounding provinces. Thanks to this vehicle, which provides physical therapy opportunities for bedridden calves, animals regain their ability to walk.

The wheeled car for bedridden calves, which stands out among the projects carried out within the scope of MAKÜ's Regional Development-Oriented Animal Husbandry Project, has also started to be used by the MAKÜ Animal Hospital and veterinarians.

The implementers of the wheeled car production project for bedridden calves, developed to prevent calf deaths, Dr. Harun Çınar from the Department of Surgery of MAKÜ Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Associate Professor Dr. Ramazan Yıldız from the Department of Internal Diseases, gave information about the calves brought to the MAKÜ Animal Hospital and treated.

Treatment Success with Wheeled Car for Bedridden Calves

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramazan Yıldız gave information about the treatment performed for the twin calves that came to the clinic. Yıldız, while explaining the treatment process, said, "The twin calves brought to our clinic applied with diarrhea complaint. After diarrhea, necessary fluid treatments were applied to the calves as a result of the examinations. One of the twins recovered and was sent back to the farm. However, due to the other calf lying down for a long time, decubitus wounds formed in its joints and therefore it could not stand. Thanks to this device, which is one of the projects carried out within the scope of the Regional Development-Oriented Animal Husbandry Project, it became possible to activate the animal's legs by tying it from the bottom and provide physical therapy. In such cases, it is necessary to encourage the calves to walk by massaging them at certain intervals. Our device, for which our university has applied for a patent, has started to be actively used in the treatment of calves."

Increase in Survival Rate in Calves

Project manager Dr. Harun Çınar stated that the wheeled car developed for bedridden calves is in the patent process and that the survival rate of calves has increased thanks to this car. Çınar said, "Our project 'wheeled car for bedridden calves', which was started in 2019 within the scope of the Animal Husbandry Project, has now started to bear fruit. This car, which is in the patent process, has started to be used and evaluated by various users. The data obtained showed that the survival rate in calves increased, the recovery process became more qualitative, and the calves were cared for more comfortably in suitable environments."
