The first promotional and training course of the new term was held at MAKÜ 60+ Renewal University, which operates under Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ). Within the framework of the program, which is carried out with the understanding of lifelong learning, participants received information about the university's operation and experienced an artistic experience that extends to Eastern Asian culture.
In the opening of the program, the Coordinator of the Renewal University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sevinç Sütlü, provided participants with information about the education process, course contents, and activities to be carried out throughout the term. Sütlü emphasized that the Renewal University is not just a structure that offers academic knowledge, but also an important platform that supports active aging, increases social interaction, and contributes to individuals' lifelong learning processes.
After the promotional program, the first lesson was given by faculty members of the Department of Eastern Languages and Literatures at MAKÜ Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In the lesson titled “The Art of Eastern Asian Calligraphy,” conducted by Research Assistant Dr. Aykut Dal from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and Research Assistant Dr. Penpe Yüksel from the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, the historical development, aesthetic value, and artistic aspects of writing in Chinese and Japanese cultures were discussed.
During the lesson, the traditions of “Shufa” in Chinese calligraphy and “Shodō” in Japanese calligraphy were introduced to the participants. It was pointed out that calligraphy is not just the art of beautiful writing, but a profound cultural heritage that contributes to the development of patience, discipline, attention, and aesthetic understanding. Participants had the opportunity to learn how writing integrates with art in Eastern Asian societies and how it is used as one of the important tools of cultural transmission.
After the theoretical training, a practical section was conducted with the contributions of doctoral student Ke Guoxing. Participants closely examined traditional calligraphy tools and learned about brush usage, ink preparation methods, and basic character writing techniques. Later, the trainees who created their own works experienced the Eastern Asian art tradition practically.
In the event, which received intense interest, participants engaged in an artistic activity that supports hand-eye coordination, attention, and fine motor skills, in addition to getting to know different cultures. At the end of the lesson, participants expressed their satisfaction, stating that the practical training was both educational and enjoyable, and thanked the academics.
It was reported that throughout the term at MAKÜ 60+ Renewal University, courses related to education, culture, art, and healthy aging themes will continue, and that participants will be supported in increasing their knowledge as well as maintaining an active social and cultural life with contributions from academics from different disciplines.
